Get Set for Comic Art Kerpow! at Lakes International Comic Art Festival 2016

The Lakes International Comic Art Festival returns for its fourth year to Kendal, Cumbria, from 14 to 16 October.

Celebrating the amazing world of comic artists, creators and writers, the weekend festival takes over the scenic town of Kendal, on the edge of the Lake District

Featuring live drawing, film, exhibitions, comic trails, workshops, performance, master-classes, a free family zone and independent publishers, the events programme is bursting with opportunities to get up close and personal with some of the leading comic artists and writers from across the world.

Get set for a celebration of comic art from across the world at Lakes International Comic Art Festival in Kendal from 14 – 16 October 2016

// SPECIAL GUESTS

The fourth Lakes International Comic Art Festival is bringing the biggest names in comic art to Cumbria. There will be over 70 special guests from across the comic world – already confirmed as part of the festival are:

// Charlie Adlard

Best known as the artist for The Walking Dead, now a major TV series as well as an incredibly popular comic. He’s also worked on many other projects including Mars Attacks, the X-Files, Judge Dredd and X-Men.

// Bryan Lee O’Malley 

A Canadian cartoonist. He created the Scott Pilgrim series, which inspired the cult classic film Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. His most recent book is the Eisner-nominated, New York Times-bestselling Seconds. He’s currently writing comic book series Snotgirl while working on his next major graphic novel.

// Joe Kelly

The creator of the lauded graphic novel I Kill Giants (currently in pre-production as a feature film) and winner of the 2012 International Manga Award, a rare feat for an American. His original graphic novel. Four Eyes, was a YALSA ‘Great Graphic Novel for Teens’ selection. Kelly is credited with writing ‘The best Superman story of all time’ in Action Comics #775, which he adapted to a feature animation home video for Warner Brothers, released to great reviews in 2012. His run on Deadpool remains the industry standard. Kelly also teaches Writing for Animation at his alma mater, NYU’s Department of Dramatic Writing.

// Mick McMahon

Started as a regular contributor to 2000AD from issue two and drew several characters for the comic, most notably Judge Dredd, Slaine, and the ABC Warriors. He also drew the much praised two-part Junkyard Demon strip for what was then known as Doctor Who Monthly in 1981. Mick has also designed for films and video games and is currently working on Kestrels an upcoming series of graphic novels.

// Duncan Fegredo

Best known for his collaborations with Mike Mignola on Mignola’s Hellboy. Books include Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, The Storm & The Fury and The Midnight Circus, all published by Dark Horse Comics.

// Ken Niimura

Winner of the Golden Prize in the 5th International Manga Award and nominated to the Eisner and Eagle Award for his work in I Kill Giants (2009). Niimura is also the author of the illustration book Zero (2010), the short story collection Traveling (2014) and Henshin (2014), published by Shogakukan in Japan. He currently lives and works in Tokyo. The festival artwork for this year has kindly been created by Ken Niimura.

// Dave McKean

The festival will also see another performance of  Black Dog – the Dreams of Paul Nash by Dave McKean – which premiered in Kendal on May 28. Dave McKean, an iconic figure in the comic art world, has worked on seminal works including Batman Arkham Asylum one of the biggest selling graphic novels of all time.

// BEATRIX POTTER REIMAGINED

To mark the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter, the Lakes International Comic Art Festival is calling on students of the arts to reinterpret and reimagine Beatrix Potter’s characters or tales.

Lakes International Comic Art Festival invites students to give Beatrix Potter a modern twist and create new work in a comic art style

The project is for students of the arts, aged 16 and over and is supported by the University of Cumbria with prizes generously provided by Wacom and Penguin Books.
